The Case

A usage and attitudinal market research study with 800 records, two pure open-ended ends, and four Others (Sp) questions required open-ended response coding and code list generation, ultimately writing codes back to the raw data file. The client was constrained by time and resources and wanted something speedy and easy.

Approach

The survey OE (Open Ends) response raw data file or verbatim file was collected in csv format and uploaded to the Actnable platform OE coding app. The OE questions variable name in the data file were specified as a required information.

The app processed the data for each record by question by response, using text analytics and Gen AI to generate key themes and assign unique codes to each theme.

The app generates two output files: the code list file (containing one code list for each question) and the data file with codes written into it.

Impact

The entire process took less than 30 minutes, including everything. Our client was very impressed with the quality, themes and code list. This also allows them to extract key insights from the themes/topics. Overall, it saved more than 80% on turnaround time and more than 50% of the cost compared to their existing traditional manual method.
